Netbook Reflection 2012

I am a year 6 student and I have just completed my 2nd year with a netbook. This is my 2012 reflection. 

Positives I experienced this year include that it is easier to make movies when you can have others use netbooks to bring up the script on a google doc and it is easier to share our work because we have our own blogs to share online by posting our work and sharing with the world. 

Negatives that occurred this year were that people played games in their learning time or rushed their work to finish and play games so they’re not up to the standards. Another negative is that people download music illegally and might download a virus and harm their netbooks. 

It was interesting that we learnt more shortcuts and learnt different types of docs. E.g: Spreadsheet, Drawing. 

Next year I’d like to learn form on google docs and I’d like to see if we get to take our netbooks home to show our parents our work.

Persuasive Writing: Saving Energy

Do you hate having to pay a lot of money on your electricity bills? Well you’re in luck!
You should start saving energy now and reject your bills and make sure they go down.

Unbelievably, you should start by using public transport, using a bike or you could just walk to school or work, this prevents the earths preposterous climate change. Cars produce greenhouse gasses that melt the ice in the arctic that makes water overflow the earth.

Not only that, but also, this can save your money just as well as the animals in the arctic. Surely you would agree that you would want to save your’s and the worlds life?

My final point is that you should start saving energy here are two more reasons how: turn off all electronics when no one is using it and take shorter showers. This will save
money and our earth for our future generations.

That is why I think you should start saving energy. I recommend that you should make sure running taps and other never used appliances and electronics like your netbook are turned off when not in use.

Electricity Explanation

Is Mother Nature important? Yes, Mother Nature gives us non-renewable and renewable sources like Fossil Fuels from inside of the earth, Hydro Power from water when it rushes through, Wind of course from the wind, Geothermal from the heat inside of the earth, Solar energy from the sun, Biomass from the plants and Wave energy that is produced from the waves. Currently people predict that someday our non-renewable resources will go. But with all of these complex ways you can make electricity, how does it become something that we use every day with the flick of a switch? This explanation will describe the journey electricity takes from Mother Nature, to our homes.

Inside of a power plant is a generator. Fuels like Coal, Natural gas, Biomass and Uranium are used to heat the water until it produces steam which powers turbines and then this wonderful process generates our electricity and can be reused over and over again.

These power plants can’t be too close together so we have power lines, carried by tall towers to carry the electricity from a power plant to a substation, that you might wonder why they’re there and what they do.

When the power lines reach a substation which have transformers in them that can reduce the voltage so it is enough to power up all of our homes in a city or the whole country.

Just enough electricity has to be generated to our distribution lines which reaches our light switches. Too much or too little power, can crash the transmission system that could create a power outage or a blackout and this could affect the city if it did happen.

Some cities that usually have power like New York or such have been struck by an unfortunate hurricane (Hurricane Sandy) and have ended up with no power. It has been one week after the hurricane and some people in New York still have no power at all and it is one of the biggest cities in America. What would you do if you had no power?

After all the process the the electricity powers your mains box and your outputs that you can use to power your homes. If you think that it takes one person to make a lightbulb work, then you're wrong. This explanation shows just how complicated it really is just to power your homes.

I heard crackling noises as I woke up, I ran outside to see my family light the gunpowder filled  inventions. I could smell the bitter smoke and I could hear the blast of the fireworks. I could see the mass if rainbow coloured stars as they dissolved. On the other side of the street bonfires turning night into a fiesta. Animals were fleeing from the plague of explosions startling the stars. A range of lights making everyone excited and happy. I was alarmed from the flying gunpowder flying towards me before they scattered and landed towards the ground. A bright red star rocketed up into the sky greeting the other stars and paused for a moment and slowly made its way to the ground. I was amazed from the flaming red flare as it ended Guy Fawkes Day

The king hesitated and pressed each of his ten palms on their foreheads and purple gas appeared before them and it disappeared.

“So, generation 4 has 8 arms, horns, shark teeth, purple eyes (as always) and he has extended arms and legs”

The brothers stepped into the ender portal and they both dissolved from human sight.

The Forest

“Woah dark and scary, Jack made a good decision to kill here...”

They ran towards the cries and stopped at a tattered piece of paper.
“Hey a note”
“Wait he uses the original slender man ways”

They continued to run and they found Slender Man.
“Hey you!”
The no faced figure turned and caught the brothers faces.
“Up for a staring contest?”
They tried their best to hide their extra arms.
“Ok, you weaklings...”
He stared at their dark, peculiar faces before they striked.
“Die!”
They pinned down the figure and a boy ran off from the figures arms.
“What are you doing?”
“Finishing the dirty work”
They slit his throat and ran the direction the boy ran.
“Look”
Steve nudged and pulled Dan down while they were stalking the woman and nephew.
“A note! Your smile will only last for now, Turn around and suffer your fate”
They turned around. Purple eyes pierced Steves face and Dan burst fire in his hand.
“Ohhhh he’s holding the sun!”

They grabbed the boy and woman and one shoved a fireball down the boys throat and the other penetrated the womans heart with his scythe.

Lost in Paradise

“How do we get out?”
“We can’t look for the portal”, it will take too long”

Steve sighed in sarcasm.

The City        

“So... Where is the city?”
“I don’t know, how do you expect me to know when you’re the navigation expert?”
“Because over there is two signs in the Balzarian language.”
“Oh, well. Ok... Thats a different case”

Steve walked up to the signs and began to read.
“Lawnimonb bymosa kakoshityu dughuti mo vte trohn Valanche momosa!”
“So what does that mean?”
“It means Sun festival happening today and the other one says this way to Valanche meaning ‘Sanctuary’ in our language”
“Why didn't I guess the last bit? That sign is stupid!”
“Maybe it isn’t the sign thats stupid”

Chapter 6
Lost in Paradise II

The brothers entered the door below the letters engraved ‘Valance 6245’
“Hey we’re looking for a teleporter”
“Guess that’d be here”
Steve looked forward and noticed that behind the open closet door was a door embroidered in a fluorescent purple glow.
“Hey Dan, they made a door in the closet, it’s the teleporter”
“I see it, lets run in 3, 2 , 1, Go!”
The brothers ran straight through the door and entered the portal.
“Where. Are. We?”
They both looked up and they were in a fiery, evil sadistic- like scenery, there were trees burning in eternal fire, there is the moon is set on fire and the ground is made of solid molten rock surrounded by what may seem to be a fiery giant mixed with a ram or what may be the devil but was only one of his guards.
“It can’t be...”
“We’re in...”
“Ender Hell”

Chapter 7
Family Reunion

“We need to get to Satane”
“Why?”
“Dan, the reason is hes a pure one and a teleporter”
“Why do we need to know if hes a pure one”
“Because if we find our true names we could become gods too”
“Cool”
They both jumped off the metre cliff they began walking to the dark fortress of Satane.
“Look the gates, that looks like...”
“Uncle”
“Oh, hi boys, what killed you here”
“Nothing just a broken teleporter”
“Ok? Go see Satane, he’s upstairs, go see him. He has something to tell you”
The boys were both wondering what the devil would want with them until they reached the top and found a demon embedded door that they carefully nudged the door and the doors pushed themselves forward revealing a bloody trail leading to the throne used by a massive red figure with red fire in his eyes.
“Hello, my nephews”

Chapter 8 - Gods

“You’re our... Uncle?”
“Yes, yes don’t wear it out”
“But”
“No butts or I won't help you. So your mother was my sister our true names were Moonfire and Sunfire which gave her blue fire eyes and mine red fire instead of purple, each pure one ha two familiars two protect”
“And we both are your familiars right?”
“Yes, haven’t you seen my warnings?”
“What warnings?”
“Like showing my face in that woman's tear and in your fire at home”
“Oh no...”
Steve looked down.
“Ok...”
“So you guys should have a voice in your head that says your true names”
“Ohhh that’s hard”
Steve and Dan started to think.
“Nothing... Wait”
“Dan?”
“I think it is.... Death..”
Dan started to change
“What?”
“Deathide”
His hands turned more crispy.
“Cool”
“So god of death, cool”
“Ah, I have a bad headache and its, talking to me”

Satan looked straight at Steve. Steve looked up, but he wasn’t Steve anymore, he was someone else. He had a dark blue skull and flaming blue fire round it. He was Skullfire.


Chapter 9
Unfinished Business

“Hey uncle can we teleport ourselves?”
“What do you think a god can do, god of death and god of fire?”
“Ok bye unc”
“Bye”
The brothers disappeared and reappeared in the kings castle.
“Hey you!”
The king turned and was in shock to see the transformed versions of the brothers still alive and breathing.
“What who teleported you?”
“Ourselves”
“No, no, no, no, no. You two aren’t becoming gods before I do.”
“Already did”
“And we finished your deal”
“Hes dead?”
“Yes”
“Well.”
“What?”
“Are we getting our evolution now?”
“Are you kidding me? You two are Gods.”
“And?”
“Thats higher and more powerful than any king in this entire dimension”
“Ok then”
“So get to work or I’ll send you two to the dungeon”
“No”
“Why?”
“Because we’re gods and you aren’t”

My Narrative Short Story

The Delivery Business

On February 41st, 3016, there was a man named Oscar. He always wore the same dark velvet red suit everyday, the suit of a hotel doorman of course. His job was to deliver packages; Although he prefered to be an hotel doorman. But he was scared of heights. His boss, Michael, Wore a heavy black suit with dark black hair that curved back even when he wakes up. Michael gave Oscar a suitcase and a newspaper to deliver to 10,001 Greece Street. It read: Deliver to Mr Zeus.

Oscar thought back, because he didn’t believe in Zeus from ancient Greek mythology.
He walked outside and stared into his new complex world with hoverboards and bikes that are faster than the speed of light in his eyes, and all he got was a old broken down scooter to deliver to floating mansions. He drove his scooter to Jump street but it stopped up to 10,000. He looked at the corner of 10,000 and a long string walkway with jagged spikes and crocodiles under it awaiting him.

At the top of the string there was ancient white cylinders and white steps covered with gold lining and at the top being an ancient temple of some sort. He was scared, frightened he didn’t know what to do... He got up and walked across the string and he never looked down. He was nearly there... Nearly there... “Look down, I’m just joking, you’re already here” Oscar fell and he landed on the ground unconscious while a bright figure picked up the package and walked away, leaving the newspaper behind.

Team Building

Today I learnt about team building with my classmates and group.  We had to cross our arms, then take another group member’s hand then we all had to be in a circle to untangle ourselves until we are all untangled. After our group challenge we played boys vs. girls and then when we started no matter how hard it was for us, Arapeta kept on trying to do it and he kept telling us to work together.  This encouragement helped the rest of the team to believe that we could do it and to keep trying.  I learnt that if you work together and you have a good team leader, you can finish a task.

NZ Shake Out Day

Today was New Zealand's National Shake Out Day. AT 9:26am there was an earthquake drill. I was at my desk, So I dropped, covered and held to stay safe. One thing we did well at T.P.S was how fast it took to drop, cover and hold. One thing I want to work on next time is the volume of the earthquake drill. Our meeting place is the Hall. Remember, in the event of an earthquake... Drop, Cover, Hold!

My Native Tree Essay

Native NZ Trees
                                         What is a native NZ tree? 

A native NZ tree is a tree that is only in our country like the very famous Ponga (Silverfern) or the red, green and sometimes even white Pohutukawa tree.
Plant Facts:
The Ponga (Silver Fern) is one of the most famous plants and trees in New Zealand and was even named for the New Zealand netball team, The Silver Ferns. On the other hand the Pohutukawa tree only sprouts in the lovely summer and is also referred to as the New Zealand Christmas tree.
Other NZ native trees:
The Kawakawa tree
which is the small shrub-like has a poisonous fruit. Are you aware that the most hazardous or poisonous fruit is the very guilty Tutu because it is known to be able to kill an adult-sized elephant that is fully grown?

Some of our weird plants:
Yes, there is the massively huge Kohuhu tree which has been
used as an wonderful perfume and
has very dark green leaves
and grey-black fruit. Their flowers sprout easily and delicately in late spring to early summer and the flowers are dark red and purple.


Our encounters with native NZ trees:
The vicious Karaka tree has devastatingly poisonous berries that may look satisfying. They look like mango fruit (Mini mangoes). This tree has smooth leaves that are strong. The berries are hard and orange and when they are about to grow they are green.Do not get attracted by the berries wonderful and tasteful looks as it will poison you!  In the traditional Maori days they squashed the fruit to make them edible so they could eat it unharmed.
Our interesting native plants:
Kohekohe is an unusual tree that has flowers that sprout straight from the trunk. Kohekohe is also called New Zealand Mahogany.This strange tree is common in the lowland places on the North Island. It also grows fruit. The fruit on the outside is green and inside of it, the colour is orange.

The Kowhai tree has 8 Kowhai species: Coastal kowhai, Godley's kowhai, Limestone kowhai, Small-leaved kowhai ,Cook Strait kowhai , Prostate kowhai and Large-leaved kowhai. In the early spring, kowhai trees’ large yellow flowers attracts birds such as the tui and bellbird. The kowhai tree is small and has bright yellow flowers. They grow beside streams and on the edges of the forest.



Endangered Tree

The Kauri is an endangered tree. This is because the tree has a type of fungus disease. This fungal disease has been going on for 10 years and is known as ‘Kauri Dieback’! Nearly all the infected Kauri trees die, making It suffer. This disease can kill seeds that are still growing and it roots are suffering,so that means the Kauri tree can not grow properly.  Kauri trees show this disease by the loss of the leaves, dead branches and many more symptoms.  Scientists are still working on the infection cure because there is still no treatment for this infection. The effect of this is stopping the Kauri tree from absorbing needed nutrients, making these trees endangered.  It has bark that is tan brown. Kauri trees can grow up to 50 metres tall and are located in the top half of the North Island.These trees were also around during the jurassic period, so don’t let them die out now!

My Observation Report

In week 4, We received a piece of paper saying what we should do to our experimental plants. It was to cover the leaves in vaseline and write down how your leaf looks. So we tested it out.

We then put two cups on the table and filled it with soil, then dumped the plant onto the first layer of soil followed by one more top layer of soil. Then we smeared vaseline onto the leaves and then we put bamboo sticks next to the plants to keep them straight. Then we put the plants on the experimental desk for the weekend.

On Monday we noticed nothing, they just went a bit brown, the next day one of the plants started to go dark brown. Following that, was that the plant started to die and the other plant was dark brown. After two weeks we noticed that one of the plants was dead and the other one was nearly dead. The next week both of the plants were dead, with the leaves burned/suffocated and were hanging off the cup’s side.

I discovered that plants with vaseline on one or more of the leaves blocks the plant from producing oxygen or breathing in carbon dioxide and they started to suffocate, being choked by the vaseline which did not enable them to grow and killed them. This is how our science experiments ended. I felt excited about doing this with my friends and I learnt what vaseline does to plants.

Jayden Week 3 Narrative

Under the most beautiful pohutukawa tree. There lived Chuck Chucky, he had black hair and he had ripped and shaggy clothing because he was too poor to afford clothes. He was a sad lonely man.


One day, his enemy Joey started to chop down Chuck’s tree, he was an evil man with no heart, but he was the most evil man in all the city.
This left Chuck furious.   


Joey ran to Coppy Cop the cop and told him that Joey was trying to cut down his tree. Then Coppy started to explain that cutting down native trees is illegal and Coppy drove him to the Pohutakawa tree. Coppy arrested Joey and gave Chuck some money. Chuck then bought a old broken down shack and at last started to live a life as a happy old man.
